Thinking about going into Chemical Engineering? What exactly is chemical engineering?

Im a first year engineering student and I dislike my intro chem class which is all bonding and theory. I know at my university chem e's only take one more actual chem course than mech e's but take lots of chem e specific courses- would those essentialy be chem courses? what do working chem e's actually do- would i have a periodic table in front of me all day ? what about in oil and gas?
