Is it cheaper to build your own dollhouse or buy a kit?

Would it be cheaper to build your own dollhouse from scratch that way it will look exactly how you want it to and you can buy a little here and there.. or to just buy a kit and build it that way. My fiance told me that i should just get a little here and there but then i thought of the whole cutting process and everything and it would all add up in the end, and a kit could possibly be changed to make it look how you want it to and add on to it and so forth, so I was just wondering what someone else thought about it.
