Are the HID light kits bad for your car/truck?

I have heard from a few people that they eventually burn up something inside underneath the hood from being so hot and it's very costly to repair. I would really like to get them, but hearing this freaked me out! Can anyone honestly say they're bad for a car? Or is this just a myth? Please help before I spend the money!
