How do you tell if a molecule is polar?

I've had this explained to me many times, but I still don't really understand how people can look at a molecule such as NH3 and just tell that it's polar. If anyone can give me any tips and tricks to just looking at the chemical formula and knowing if it's polar or not, it would be much appreciated:)
